- ★ ☆ ☆ ☆ ☆H&R Block has a website that claims you can file a federal return for free, and a state return for $39.99. Its a bait and switch. Nowhere in the screens you fill out does it tell you that you've "left" the free part and gone into a pay part for federal. After an hour of answering questions I went to pay and it wanted $79.99 for the federal and $39.99 for the state. I went to their customer service chat and was told that if i wanted a free federal i'd have to start over -- and that they would DELETE everthing I already entered so that I would have to enter it all again.
